- Innovative tools, threat intelligence, and “human firewall”: proprietary blockchain-based infrastructure solution, database security framework – plus continuous monitoring and training for increased awareness
Vienna (OTS) - June 24, 2025 | The threat posed by targeted cyberattacks continues to escalate for companies, as shown by recent studies by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA): According to the Threat Landscape Report 2024, there was a significant increase in cyber incidents in the EU – 11,079 cases in the first half of 2024. Hacking is no longer a marginal phenomenon, but a lucrative business model for organized groups – with professional structures, a division of labor, and increasingly sophisticated attack methods.
Amidst this development, the deadline for implementing the EU's NIS2 directive to increase the cybersecurity of companies and institutions in the European Union – for companies in critical sectors – is approaching. The consequence: many organizations need to take action to strengthen their IT security quickly and sustainably. But even for companies that are not yet subject to the NIS2 regulation, a strategically thought-out and resilient security approach is worthwhile. This is because cyberattacks are increasingly targeting SMEs and smaller businesses – often deliberately, as they often lack effective protection mechanisms.
Holistic IT security architecture instead of piecemeal patchwork
“Every day, we see how real the risk of cyber attacks has become – from production stoppages in industrial companies to data leaks costing service providers millions,” says Bernd Schellnast, Head of Operations and member of the management board at Sphinx IT Consulting. “Our response to this is a holistic and practical security approach that encompasses not only technology, but also processes and people within companies.”
Instead of relying on individual measures, Sphinx relies on an integrated security model. The approach covers all levels of the IT landscape – from infrastructure to user interface. The five core areas of the Sphinx security architecture – infrastructure protection, secure applications, data security, active monitoring, and awareness training – interlock to provide a seamless protective shield for companies of all sizes. “The question is not whether an attack will come, but when – and how well you are prepared. Those who only take selective action run the risk of overlooking dangerous gaps,” says Schellnast.
NIS2 implementation as an opportunity for strategic IT realignment
The implementation of the NIS2 Directive increases the requirements for technical and organizational security measures. What many companies see as a burden, Sphinx sees as an opportunity: “NIS2 is not purely a compliance issue – it is also an impetus to finally think about IT security strategically and holistically. This applies not only to critical infrastructure, but also to small and medium-sized enterprises – because it is precisely there that effective protection mechanisms are often lacking,” emphasizes Schellnast.
Sphinx supports companies and organizations with risk analyses, implementation concepts, training, and technical solutions to combine legal requirements with economic benefits in a practical way – including preparation for cyber rating processes, which are increasingly decisive for business opportunities.
Proprietary technologies for maximum resilience and rapid response – BlueBoxx, SCURTY
In order to not only plan for security, but also to be able to deploy it with maximum efficiency in an emergency, Sphinx has developed several innovative proprietary solutions: The highly secure BlueBoxx infrastructure solution, based on blockchain technology, enables complete system recovery in just a few minutes – crucial in the event of ransomware attacks or disaster scenarios. The SCURTY database security framework automates authorization and access monitoring in Oracle and Exasol systems, ensuring traceable compliance and protection at the data level. “Solutions such as our BlueBoxx offer companies a real emergency plan – not only for damage control, but for the immediate and complete restart of business operations after a cyber attack,” explains Schellnast.
Strengthening the human firewall – security awareness is crucial
Despite technical measures, humans remain the weakest link in the security chain. According to ENISA, social engineering, phishing, and human misconfigurations are among the most common gateways for attacks. Sphinx addresses this risk with targeted training and awareness programs for employees. “A well-trained team is the best defense against cyber threats. We raise awareness not by pointing fingers, but with practical content that is immediately effective,” says Schellnast.
Conclusion: IT security only works holistically
In an age where cyber threats are part of everyday life, IT security has become a core business task. Companies that take action today not only create protection, but also trust – among customers, partners, and investors. “At Sphinx, we believe that security is not a product, but a holistic process – and this begins with a partner who has the big picture in mind. That's exactly what we offer companies,” concludes Bernd Schellnast.
